Robert Vadney Interview

robertvinterview

So Robert, tell us what you’ve been up to lately and what can we expect from you in the near future?

Well, I haven’t been DJing that much due to studio work.
I’ve been finishing my ‘Christmas Anthems’ for this Christmas (following my ‘Halloween Anthems’ point of view), doing remixes for various artists (mostly Oakenfold), having plenty of rehearsals with my band so I may finally get this project on the road (see: myspace.com/DisorderedIndoors) and finally, my album ‘Dance 4 Death’ which will be out in 2010 (Perfecto Records) and owns the largest amount of time I’ve spent on any production of mine – it’s a whole new sound/idea showcasing a different lifestyle/mentality of Club music – there seems to be quite an anticipation for this and so, it’s quite exciting..

You have a very different sound then any other edm producer, can you tell us how did you come about experimenting with this style?

I could become a theoretical freak and analyze every bit regarding how the sound is made but, in general, it just happened.
Despite my ears, brain, point of view, mentality, I would say that every single thing that has happened in my life (bad or good), has contributed to this, in it’s own way..

How did you come about the whole Halloween EP idea? That album is, for a lack of better words, the shit!

Thank you, I’ll take that as a compliment.
The first “Gothic Trance” piece I ever wrote is ‘Lullaby For A Ghost’ (about 4 years ago), before I was recruited to ‘Perfecto Records’ by Oakenfold and I hadn’t even given it a category name.
Last year (2.5 years after having done ‘Fallen Angel’s Symphony’ and ‘Moonlight Sonata’), I had the “epiphany” to do a ‘Halloween EP’, though that wasn’t good enough – it was too small – and so, while making final decisions regarding the release, I told Paul that I didn’t want it to be an EP, but an Album and the remaining few days of that week, I locked myself in my studio and wrote ‘The Pumpkin King’, ‘Pinocchio’, ‘The Undead Bride’ and of course the Intro, which has a LOT of meaning.
Due to my club music and I being overly different and dark to categorize into the typical Trance genres, when asked what I would call this style, I replied:
‘I’d say it’s a type of ‘Gothic Trance’.’

And so, a while after it’s release, I discovered that I’ve been named “King of Gothic Trance” by Oakenfold and fans, which I found awesome but strange at the same time, as “King” is a colossal title to possess..

What other types of music do you listen to? Do you get any inspirations from those genres? Any favorite groups/producers?

I listen to whatever I may like, but I find myself mostly listening to 80s’ Darkwave, Old-school Goth, Alt.Rock, Film Scores etc, as I like more artistic things.
Inspiration lies in everything and nothing.
There’s a fair amount of artists I like very much, be musicians, video makers, animators, painters, photographers etc.
f.i. Joy Division, Sisters of Mercy, Tuxedomoon, The Royal Family and The Poor, Solid Space, Jans Svankmajer, Tim Burton’s past work, Brian Warner’s (aka Marilyn Manson) past work, HIM etc..

What would you say your favorite venue is to play in and why?

Any place I’m appreciated and feels like home..

So you’re on the road now, what are some things that are a necessity for you on these trips?

Ataraxia..

What can a fan expect when he or she goes to a Robert Vadney gig?

Large amounts of rhythm, melody and emotion..

How do you feel about websites like Youtube, that allow users to upload, for instance your music?

It’s fine, as long as everyone states the info correctly.
From what I’ve been told and seen, too many people enter wrong details, don’t upload full/proper music/videos etc..

What is your goal in the music scene?

Merely the same things true artists and innovators search for/deserve..
Mostly ultimate recognition for what I do..

With Halloween here, got anything planned? Any costumes you have in mind?

Of course! To me, Halloween is more important than any birthday, lol!
I’ll be playing a big Halloween event in Larissa – Greece..

Thanks again Robert! Maybe next time if you’re in the states we can do a video interview, and plus I’d love to see you live! Keep up the great work with your music and I wish you lots of success in your career! Happy early Halloween!

Not a problem – it’s been a pleasure..
